Bedford, Texas, Jan. 1, 2008 — The Automotive Management Institute (AMI) is accepting applications for the annual $1,000 Richard Cossette/Gale Westerlund Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, offered in conjunction with the Automotive Service Association (ASA), honor the contributions these individuals made to AMI, ASA and the collision repair industry.
The scholarship will be applied toward the recipient’s expenses to attend the 2008 International Autobody Congress & Exposition (NACE) in Las Vegas, Nov. 5-8. NACE, the world's largest collision repair event, is sponsored by ASA, and offers a comprehensive lineup of AMI, industry and technical seminars, a trade show with 500-plus exhibiting companies and the opportunity to network with other collision industry professionals. To be eligible for the award, the following requirements must be met: applicants must work in the collision repair industry; must demonstrate an interest in self-improvement through management education; must own or work for a business that is an ASA Collision Division member in good standing; and, if the applicant is not the business owner, must be recommended by the business owner. Richard Cossette owned Lehman's Garage in Minneapolis, Minn., and was a charter founder of AMI and a $50,000 Charter Counsellor contributor to AMI's EXCEL program. He was the first chairman of EXCEL and was the recipient of AMI's Annual Recognition Award in 1994. He was awarded an honorary Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation in 1997 to further recognize his commitment and dedication to AMI. He also held numerous leadership positions on the ASA board of directors and was active in several industry organizations until his death in 2002.
Gale Westerlund owned Gale's Auto Center in Blaine, Minn., and was a $25,000 Guarantor contributor to EXCEL. He earned the Institute's AAM designation in 1993, and also served on the ASA board of directors for many years. He was an active member of ASA and other collision industry organizations until his death in 2005.

The late Ralph Silverman (the first APSA of Illinois President), whom this program honors, was a stalwart in the cause for industry advancement through education. This program was founded to further promote quality and high standards through education within the automotive aftermarket industry.
The Scholarship program provides up to six (6) $500 scholarships to students who meet the requirements and intend to pursue a career in the automotive aftermarket industry. Students are eligible to apply each academic year up to four years.
Deadline for applications is June 30th of each year.

The MAPA Educational Development Scholarship Fund is a scholarship fund sponsored by the Michigan Automotive Parts Association. The purpose of this fund is to assist the legal dependents of Michigan Automotive Parts Association members and their employees pursue a program of undergraduate education. Those eligible to apply include full-time employees, and the legal dependents of full-time employees of members of the Michigan Automotive Parts Association.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in the university's Automotive Aftermarket Management curriculum's Heavy Duty Management program or the Heavy Duty Vehicle Technology program. Scholarship recipients must also be U.S. citizens with demonstrated financial need, who are maintaining a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
Other criteria include participation in three campus or community-related activities and demonstration of career interest. The recipient must remain enrolled full time for the full academic year and maintain measurable academic progress.

Who May Apply?
Applicants will ordinarily be high school seniors. Applications will also be accepted from high school graduates and persons possessing a GED. Scholarship awards may be used in any accredited college or university in the state of Florida and at Northwood University.
Individual applicants for scholarships must be nominated by a member of the association. Recipients shall be selected on the bases of academic achievement, merit and need. FAIA members/business owners themselves are not eligible to receive a scholarship grant, but their children are eligible, as are their employees and their children.

The SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in 1984 to foster leadership opportunities in the specialty equipment marketplace and support educational goals for students. Over the past two decades, SEMA Scholarships have supported over 400 students with more than $500,000 in scholarship awards.
The program rewards the best and brightest students engaged in studies leading to a career in the automotive aftermarket or a related field.
